Share itineraries on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter

We just made some updates to Trip Sharing! Now, it’s even easier to share trips with people, and you can also post your plans on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter with one convenient click.

One click is all it takes to publish your trip on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter.

If you want to make any comments or share additional information about your trip, simply edit the post before you make it go live.

In addition to sharing trips via email, you can generate a link that takes people straight to your trip. Just cut and paste the link and give it to the person or people you want to share with. You can deactivate the link at any time if you decide you don’t want others to access the trip.

We’re really excited about these trip share updates, because they provide such simple ways for people to connect with each other. This will help make travel easier and more valuable for many of you, which makes the TripIt crew very happy.

All well and good, but when can I get a tripit badge for facebook, like I have for LinkedIn and my Blog?

I'd like to share some but not all details of my trips. Anyway a greatly abridged update could go to one's social networks (e.g., Bob is heading to Madrid; Bob is returning from Madrid) and no link to the tripit itinerary?

I add a vote for a Facebook app just like the one that already exists for LinkedIn. I've seen this requested in many comments around the web and am surprised that you guys haven't got around to do it yet... what's the roadblock?

yeah I don't want people seeing my confirmation numbers or FF numbers. That makes no sense, there should definitely be a simple view available for public postings. Where's the facebook app?

How about travel profiles? My business life sits on LinkedIn, but my personal life is partly on FB. I'd like business travel and personal travel categories so I can decide where my trips are visible...

Is there a way to post my TripIt info directly (or via iCal) to Google calendar and then allow other Google calendar users to have access to it?

One thing you might want to keep in mind when it come to making your Travel Plans public on a site like facebook. Once you post your itinerary out there everyone now knows that you are on the road, they know you wife is home alone, or that your home is completely empty and can be easily robbed. Clearly there is a need for a group of people to know your Plans, but do you really want EVERYONE knowing?

Yeah, this feature is next-to-worthless if I have to first remove sensitive (but important!) information like FF numbers, trip cost, and the like. I want to be able to give people a quick link to my itinerary (flight #s, gate #s, times, etc.) without broadcasting all of my personal information...

Peter, you actually don't need to worry about deleting sensitive information from your itinerary before making it publicly accessible. In the public-enabled view we automatically hide your ticket number, confirmation numbers, price, and frequent flyer numbers.

Is there a way to have the post on Facebook include the trip photo I uploaded rather than the big orange suitcase? It obviously looks nicer but also let's people know at a glance where you're going.

This is definitely something that needs amending guys.

You have arbitrarily decided which information gets posted and which not. Well... I think I am the best judge of that. "Inner circle" (do you really have to pay just to change rights?) will have one setting, another group will have another and so on. I can think of 3 groups of people I would like accessing different information. Why not link it DIRECTLY to the groups (or lists) feature of facebook?

What would be the best is if I had a matrix of groups (lists) down the side and across the top the different items I want viewed (arrival times, FF number, etc. etc.).

I do NOT want people knowing my arrival times in a public viewing.

Hope you listen and can make some changes... they are really needed!

Hi Philip,

Thanks for your feedback! In response to your concerns, I want to clarify a few things about Facebook Connect for TripIt.

To begin with, the use of this feature is entirely at your discretion. If you decide to opt into the feature, and authorize Facebook to publish your trip information, then the following information will be published to your Wall (and only visible to the people on Facebook who have permission to see your Wall posts):

1. The name of the trip
2. The month and year the trip will be taken
3. The length of the trip

Details like flight numbers, arrival times, and other information will not be visible in the posts that TripIt publishes to your Facebook Wall.

If you are the trip owner and click on the trip post published on your Wall, you will see detailed information because it is your trip, and you have access to your own trip details at all times.

I hope that helps clear up your concerns about Facebook Connect for TripIt.

Also, regarding the inner circle feature of TripIt Pro, this is a tool that allows you to set a group of people with whom you automatically share your trips on TripIt. These people have the same rights and permissions as those with whom you share your trips using the free version of TripIt. The difference is just a matter of convenience for you. Rather than having to manually share trips with people each time you set them up, with the inner circle feature, TripIt does that for you.

It seems that details can be controlled only if one posts on social media. It also seems that people have wanted to control what info gets out for 2 years now. When are you going to fix things so that we can control what info gets out if we share separately from social media?
